What Is Bio-Clean?

March 31, 2009 · 4 Comments

biocleansml
Bio-Clean is a blend of bacteria and enzymes. The bacteria are natural and are not genetically-engineered. The enzyme concentration is the most powerful on the market.

100% Safe and Green

Bio-Clean is non-poisonous and contains no acids. It creates no fumes, and it does not attack live tissue nor inorganic materials, only organic wastes like grease, hair, food particles, paper, cotton & sewage. This makes Bio-Clean safe for people, plumbing pipes and systems and the environment. Bio-Clean changes the waste particles into water, which run harmlessly out of your waste system. Not only do these elements clear out your system, they also recycle and enrich our environment, which is helpful for plant life.

Bio-Clean is an effective product and positively affects our ecology. This is the only product that recycles organic waste back into plant food and is not harmful to pets or marine life. It is so safe, even a child can apply it. Because its action is natural, it enhances nature’s ability to cope with man’s pollution.
Check out this video for more details!

Bio-Clean can be used on clogs; however, it may take several days depending on severity. Regular maintenance treatments will prevent new build-up. Plumbing systems can be cleaned in one or two weeks: time is determined by the type of material build-up. Bio-Clean will go anywhere there is food–even on the walls of the pipes–eliminating odors and will remove the gunk that chemicals leave behind.  When kept dry, at normal temperatures, the shelf-life of this product can be several years.  Bio-Clean, can “renew an entire system!”

How long would you keep a car and why?

March 24, 2009 · Leave a Comment

As much as I like having new things I am a fan of late model automobiles.  It generally feels more financially responsible to me.  There does come a time when it makes sense to trade up.  Why would I do it? Why should anyone start looking at new stuff?  I guess with an automobile there is status value and an emotional attachment appeal that may overshadow any financial considerations.

Those considerations aside there are some good practical reasons to trade up.  There is the peace of mind knowing you have a necessity in your life you can depend on.  There are the safety improvements both in new technology and the fact that a new product probably has a much better chance of having safety components working the way they where originally designed.  There is the reliability which improves convenience.

Depending on the gas prices of the day the mileage may come into play saving a significant amount of spendable income each month.  Hi efficiency can make a big difference if you are trying to stay on a monthly budget.  Not having to spend on repair bills is a big advantage too.   It is nice to have a warranty in place and not worrying about expensive surprise repairs.

When I think about this stuff and I see an old central heating or cooling unit in one of our customers basement I wonder why there are not a lot more 20 and 30 year old cars on the road.  Is it a status or emotional need that makes the difference or have the car companies done a much better job of explaining the value.  If a home is a typical families most valuable asset you have to wonder  if the foundational elements should be so old in many cases.  I mean… a car is important but how much time do you and your family spend in it compared to your house?

Tip of the Week: Save Energy, Save Money

February 27, 2009 · 1 Comment

As Operations Manager here at Wolfe Plumbing, I felt that it would benefit our readers if I were to give a brief  “Tip of the Week.”  This week’s tip will be titled Save Energy, Save Money.

February 27, 2009: Tip of the Week – Save Energy, Save Money

Today’s utility cost are on the rise and are at the highest they have ever been. Now is the time to save energy and money and, at the same time, increase your comfort at home. Here are some simple ways that you can Save Energy, Save Money:

Programmable Thermostat: There are many different options in programmable thermostats that can save you big money –up to 33%–on your annual heating and cooling costs. By installing a programmable thermostat, you can have the temperature programed in your home to automatically change to energy-saving mode.  This is convenient for when you are home, sleeping or away–you can have a different temperature setting for each!

Heat Manager (Economizer) Control: This microprocessor control is a fuel-saving device for hot water (hydronic) heating, forced air (furnace) and central air-conditioning systems. This patented process reduces fuel consumption by 10% to 20%. This control reduces wear on parts, flue emissions and electrical usage when installed on any new or existing gas or oil heating and cooling unit. You will save energy and money by allowing your system to run more efficiently. The economizer control determines the demand for heat or cool air/water by using an easily-installed strap-on temperature sensor that monitors your system’s out-flow temperature and the rate that this temperature is changing.  In other words, it uses leftover heat from the last time the system was run before creating a flame.

High Efficiency Equipment: If your heating and cooling equipment is more than ten-years old, not keeping your house comfortable, performing inefficiently or needs upgrading, consider replacing it with a high-efficiency unit. A high-performance, high-efficiency unit delivers more comfort than older models while using less energy and saving you more money. Any equipment rated at 90% AFUE and is 15 or 16 seer could cut your annual energy bill by nearly $200.

Change Your Filter And Seal Your Home: Check your filter every month, especially during heavy-use months (winter and summer). If the filter looks dirty after a month, change it. At a minimum, you filter should be changed every three months. A dirty filter will slow down air flow, make the system work harder to keep you warm or cool (wasting energy) and could lead to expensive maintenance and/or early system failure. Purchasing an electrostatic air filter (washable air filter) aids in reducing costs by keeping your heating and cooling equipment cleaner, so they operate at the highest capacity possible. Electrostatic air filters create their own electrostatic charge, so it does not add to your electrical cost and removes up to 93% of airborne contaminates.

But before you invest in a new heating and cooling system, make sure that you have addressed the big air leaks in your house and in the duct system.  Ducts that move air to-and-from a forced-air furnace, central air conditioner, or heat pump are often big energy wasters. Sealing your ducts can improve the efficiency of your heating and cooling system by, as much as, 20 percent — and sometimes much more! Focus first on sealing ducts that run through the attic, crawlspace, unheated basement or garage. Use duct sealant (mastic) or metal-backed UL approved (look for the red letters!)foil tape to seal the seams and connections of ducts. After sealing the ducts in those spaces, wrap the ducts in insulation to keep them from getting hot in the summer or cold in the winter.

Geothermal

February 24, 2009 · Leave a Comment

I titled this as just “geothermal” because I think a lot of people are not clear on exactly what geothermal heating and cooling is all about.   It’s a magical thing in one way and in another way its the most basic thing in the world.  Like most high tech solutions it is a way of efficiently making use of the natural world by taking advantage of existing mechanical know-how and applying it in a new way.  Geothermal is not really all that high tech when you come down to it.  It is however an ingenious way of maximizing use of the earths resources to live better and minimize our carbon footprint.

It is simple enough to understand that if we lived in a cave the heating and cooling requirements would be vastly different than having a house out in the open environment.  It is not too practical to install our house in a cave (and there are not to many people who want to) but we can connect the cave to our house with a series of pipes pretty easilly.  This is essentially what a geothermal system does.  Then we connect a special machine called a heat pump to get us the little bit of extra heating or cooling so the cave temperature of 55 degrees is converted to 70 degrees.  This is a tremendous energy advantage and provides home comfort and savings.

Want to know more about geothermal or other high tech energy solutions?  Contact me… I would love to give you a free evaluation of your home and discuss the possibilties on how to improve your comfort, lower your energy bill, and save the environment in the process!

The Stimulus Package

February 18, 2009 · Leave a Comment

The stimulus package is big news right now and some of that money may actually trickle down to the average household for improvements they really needed to do anyway.  So far this is what I have been told is coming available in regards to our industry:

Each homeowner has up to $1500 available under this new law to improve the energy efficiency of their home.  An investment in “qualifying” improvements allows a 30% tax credit to a maximum of $1500 over two years.   Qualifying equipment includes 15 SEER air conditioners, 8.5 HSPF split system heat pumps, 14 SEER/8HSPF package heat pumps, 95% AFUE gas/propane furnaces; and 90% AFUE oil furnaces (ask more about my opinion on that!) and a whole lot of other things including certain water heaters.

We have a lot of experience with these kinds of upgrades and this is the kind of thing that the average homeowner can really use professional help on.  In my mind, the exciting news is the rebate you could get every month with a permanently lower utility bill.

Tip of the Week: Preventing Frozen Pipes

February 16, 2009 · Leave a Comment

As Operations Manager here at Wolfe Plumbing, I felt that it would benefit our readers if I were to give a brief  “Tip of the Week.”  Our first tip will be about preventing frozen pipes.

February 16, 2009: Tip of the Week–Preventing Frozen Pipes

Make sure that your hose faucets are turned off on both the outside and the inside of the house.  Also, having frost-free hose bibs would be a smart upgrade to help prevent your pipes from freezing.

Insulate your pipes–especially in unheated areas (basement, attic, crawlspace and etc.).  Pipes that are located outside your home, along exterior walls and under kitchen and bathroom cabinets are also subject to freezing and should also be insulated.

Wen you are not going to be home, keep the heat in your house up to at least 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

And lastly, if your heat goes out for an extended period of time, make sure to turn of the water at the main shut-off valve and open the faucets; this will prevent water from staying in the pipes and freezing.  If you did need to use the water, you can always turn the water back on temporarily.

If your pipes do freeze, it is VERY IMPORTANT to avoid thawing any pipe with an open flame.  This could cause further damage to your pipes or–in the worst case scenario–even start a fire in your home.

Call your friendly plumber at Wolfe Plumbing, Heating, and Air Conditioning anytime–24/7–for friendly and reliable service.

Happy Birthday, President Washington

Oil Dropped; Why Upgrade?

February 16, 2009 · Leave a Comment

This a a great question… and with prices at 4 and 5 yr lows there is the temptation stop paying attention again.  I’ve been in this business since 1977 and have followed oil prices and the “energy independence” and “renewable sources of energy” markets and rhetoric since that time.

I really thought that oil would have increased in price much faster than it did over the last 30 years and our energy habits would have changed more dramatically.  Our dependence on foreign oil that led to gas lines in the late 70’s and early 80’s created huge interest but only temporary changes in many cases.  As the market stablized prices only gradually crept up and a lot of the progress that we could have made individually faded away.

There is something different this time though.  We had the shock of a rapid price increase like last time but we never did experience the shortages and that’s a good thing.  However, global supply and demand were not such a big factor before.   Supply and demand has never been closer and it is inevitable that oil prices (and correspondingly gas and electric) will rise as the world economy recovers.

We’ve got a little breather right now but if you want to avoid sticker shock in a year or two this is the perfect time to make some energy saving improvements.  Because retail activity is slower than normal right now you can find great bargains in energy efficiency upgrades.
